Important: Your Rights Regarding Student Health & Counseling Services

Dear Parent or Guardian,
As required by Texas Senate Bill 12, Mineral Wells ISD is providing this annual notice of the routine, campus-based health-related and counseling services available to students during the school year. These services are not new services and are provided by qualified school staff, including nurses, counselors, administrators, teachers, and other trained personnel.
Examples of Routine Health-Related Services:
- Injury evaluation and first aid treatment (ice packs, band-aids, etc.)
- Assessment of illness or physical symptoms at school, including nursing assessment
- Health screenings (vision, hearing, scoliosis)
- Communicable disease evaluation, exclusion, and readmission
- Health and hygiene education (handwashing, illness prevention, providing clean clothing or menstrual supplies)
- Wellness promotion and stress management
Examples of Routine Counseling-Related Services:
- Advise students and their parents regarding the importance of postsecondary education, coursework designed to prepare students for postsecondary education, and financial aid availability and requirements;
- Early mental health prevention and intervention;
- Building skills related to managing emotions, establishing and maintaining positive relationships, and responsible decision-making;
- Substance abuse prevention and intervention;
- Suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention;
- Grief-informed and trauma-informed practices;
- Positive behavior interventions and supports;
- Positive youth development; and
- Safe, supportive, and positive school climate.
If you do not want your child to receive these services, you have the option of opting out of one or both of the services. Please go online to Skyward and Online Forms to opt out of either or both of these services.
If you want your child to have these services, no action is needed.
If any health or counseling services are needed beyond the routine services, campus staff will contact the parent to discuss their child’s additional needs.
In addition, a letter is provided by the Texas Education Agency notifying parents of their rights in regard to their child's education.
