Rams Rising – October Edition Theme/Focus: Emotional Awareness & Coping Skills
Posted Date: 10/01/25 (04:30 PM)
As the school year settles in, students of all ages may begin to show their true emotions—excitement, frustration, worry, or even sadness. Learning how to notice and manage feelings is key to healthy growth.
💡 Practical Tips for All Ages
- 🖍️ Name the feeling – For young children, use simple words (“happy,” “mad,” “worried”). For older students, encourage more specific language (“frustrated,” “overwhelmed,” “disappointed”).
- 🎨 Healthy outlets – Drawing, playing, journaling, music, or sports can help students release strong emotions in safe ways.
- 🫂 Model coping – Share with your child how you calm down when upset (deep breaths, short breaks, going for a walk). Kids learn by watching us.
- 🗣️ Create a safe space – Let your child know all feelings are okay to talk about, even the hard ones.
❤️ Why It Matters
When students can name and manage their feelings, they are better equipped to build friendships, problem-solve, and succeed in school. Emotional awareness is the foundation for resilience and lifelong mental health.
🌟 Encouragement/Invitation
Take a few minutes this month to check in with your child about their feelings. Even short, simple conversations can make a big difference in how supported they feel.
🧠 About the Mental Health Counselors
At MWISD, we have Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) and Licensed Professional Counselor Associates (LPC-Associates) on staff who provide therapy during the school day, free of charge, for all current MWISD students. We specialize in supporting students who may be experiencing trauma, thoughts of self-harm, family changes (such as divorce), abuse, ADHD, anxiety, depression, and more.
👉 Our role is different from the campus school counselors.
- School counselors help with academic needs, scheduling, and everyday social/emotional support.
- Mental health counselors (LPCs and LPC-Associates) provide ongoing therapy—meeting with students individually or in groups to address deeper emotional and behavioral needs.
💡 If you believe your child could benefit from counseling, and they are not currently seeing a counselor outside of school, please reach out to your child’s campus school counselor to request a referral.
